The first time I heard about this rule was actually from the movie ‘we bought a zoo’ with Matt Damon. It wasn’t a 5-second rule Matt Damon was talking about, but he said:
“You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery, and I promise you, something great will come of it.”
I was 14 years old when I saw this movie and I absolutely loved this 20-second idea.
Whether it was walking up to a boy and striking up a conversation (I was terrified) or getting out of my comfort zone and singing on stage — this rule was life-changing.
Some years later, I came across Mel Robbins and saw her TED talk. In that talk, she mentioned the 5-second rule. It was practically the same idea, but you had 5 seconds to just get up and take action.
“Hesitation is the kiss of death. You might hesitate for a nanosecond, but that's all it takes. That one small hesitation triggers a mental syste, that's designed to stop you. And it happens in less than - you guessed it - five seconds.”
In the video below I tell you about the 5-second rule — what it is and how it works — and I discuss why it’s so powerful & how I have used it myself!
It’s time to take action — in just 5 seconds!
